Kevin Thornton was given a make or break offer by Gary Johnson at the end of last season – come back fully fit and with the right attitude and you will earn a contract. Over the past few days, the midfielder has thankfully proved himself and returned from the break as one of the better conditioned players of the group according to the Cobblers boss.
This has now led to the former Coventry man earning a month to month deal with the Cobblers holding an option for the next month and the one after etc. With the likes of Arron Davies and Jake Robinson signed up there’s plenty for Thornton to compete with during pre-season and he now looks to earn a starting place for the big kick off in a month’s time at home to Accrington Stanley.
This week is all about fitness with it being the first full week back but Johnson has admitted that he wants the players to be using the ball early on in the training as well. A week on Saturday sees the opening friendly at Brackley in the Maunsell Cup final and by then we hope to see the beginnings of a big season and the first look at some new faces. For Thornton, the first step has been taken in his bid to be a part of it all once more.
