Following the exit of Billy McKay yesterday it emerged that Tadhg Purcell may also be about to leave Sixfields – but only on loan – as Gary Johnson looks to give him some first team football on his return from a horrendous injury that kept him out of most of his debut season with the Cobblers. Purcell has been linked to a return to Darlington where he scored nine times in twenty two games at the end of the 2009/10 season and Johnson said it was “possible” that a move could happen in order for the striker to gain valuable first team opportunities.
It seems a decent plan to get Purcell out so that he can rediscover his form and where better than the place that made him a wanted man ahead of the move last summer? He wouldn’t be having any impact on League Two and the Conference would give him a real chance of getting back his match fitness and goal scoring ability.
Further to that, Johnson indicated that we could be in the market to bring in “another striker or two” following this week’s twists. Speaking in his Thursday Press Conference over on Cobblers World, Johnson said that he is likely to bring in another striker as part of the squad so I would imagine that it would be another in the bracket of last week’s signings that will more than likely be squad players for now.
Meanwhile, Kevin Thornton is set to undergo hernia surgery so will miss the next “two to three weeks” of pre-season, near enough leading up to the first game of the season against Accrington.
So just when you thought the transfer dealings were done and dusted, the Cobblers surprise us once again, Well it wouldn’t be the same without it would it?!
