Deal Or No Deal analogy says everything’s ok…

Northampton Town 0-3 Reading

Pre-Season Friendly

Saturday, July 23rd 2011

Deal or No Deal has been back on my telebox in the last few weeks since I became a stay at home Dad and I’ve started treating pre-season like one of the contestants who take out the £100,000 or £250,000 boxes and after a couple of seconds of thought and disappointment say “it’s ok…it’s ok!” to make themselves feel better and to make the watching country think that they should remain tuned in.

The latest friendly defeat left me feeling the same way towards the Cobblers as we get closer and closer to the start of the season. A 3-0 defeat at home Reading sounds like a bit of a hammering but adopting the DOND technique I found myself reassuring myself that everything is ok, that it is only pre-season and it’s not the end of the world.

Yet there’s suddenly a lingering doubt as to whether I’m just ignoring some of the facts, brushing things aside and trying to hide from one or two issues. I wasn’t at the game but from reports and highlights it didn’t seem like the tonking that the score line might suggest but there’s one or two defensive moments that should be looked at all the same.

It’s unfair to lay any blame or put pressure on the young lads though, particularly against a full strength Reading outfit. Shane Long netted twice, the first a glancing header of Sam Walker and then a penalty in the second half and put himself once again in the shop window for the likes of Newcastle to admire. Hal Robson-Kanu got the third on the hour mark and the Royals eased to a victory that showed some moments of real quality.

The Cobblers were without Nana so Lewis Young came in at right back but it was a strong side from us as well, starting in a similar vain to the Forest game in which we produced some good stuff going forward. There was no opening goal this time though and eventually the difference in class would show.

So is everything OK or are we doomed? Again I don’t think we should panic at all, perhaps we should wipe the brow a little if Cambridge do a similar job on us at the Abbey on Tuesday night but certainly not yet. For the moment, it’s ok…it’s ok…
