Ipswich Town v Northampton Town
Carling Cup First Round
Tuesday, August 10th 2011
The title of this post sums up my feelings about Ipswich in the cup tonight. Last season’s Carling Cup run ended at Portman Road and this one should, on paper at least, go the same way. The Tractor Boys had a superb 3-0 win at Bristol City on Saturday and are gearing up for a promotion push under Paul Jewell this season.
That makes them an entirely different proposition this time and Gary Johnson faces a huge battle if he is to try and get past phase one of the competition that made the Cobblers famous last season. John Johnson is likely to miss out after limping out of the Accrington game on Saturday so either Nick McKoy or Ashley Westwood could come in.
There could be a chance for Bas Savage as well after the striker signed non contract terms last week and followed that up by playing for the last few minutes in the league opener.
Ipswich are without a clutch of players on international duty including Tamas Priskin, Josh Carson and David Stockdale with Adam Lee-Barrett set to start in goal and Nathan Ellington to be handed a debut up front.
More in hope than expectation is about right I think..any progress that comes from tonight is very welcome indeed!
Sorry mate – it’s Josh Carson and Aaron Lee-Barrett.
