After the cupset on Tuesday night, we’re desperate to avoid a repeat of last season when a similar good start in the Carling Cup was somewhat overshadowed by a poor start in the league. It took until September 11th to notch the first three points of 2010/11 but we head to Aldershot full of confidence. There’s been late drama at the EBB Stadium in the last two seasons with an injury time equaliser denying us eleven months ago and a Cobblers collapse helping the Shots to a 2-1 win in 2009.
Aldershot were winners at Valley Parage last Saturday in one of the better results of the opening day of the season as they scored two first half goals to run out 2-1 winners. The Shot’s midweek cup tie at West Ham was postponed due to the London riots so they should be fresh ahead of the Cobblers’ visit.
Gary Johnson’s men are coming in off the back of another cup upset with that victory at Ipswich on Tuesday night but the goalless draw at home to Accrington last Saturday means we’re looking for our first league goals as well as that victory.
It’s the first doubtful game for Bayo of the season after the big man limped off in the warm up on Tuesday night with a dead leg. Gary Johnson has said that it’s looking better but Bas Savage in on standby should he not make it. Andy Holt and Shaun Harrad are out for another month but Kevin Thornton comes back into contention after making the bench at Portman Road.
Aldershot will welcome back Luke Guttrdidge to the squad after the former Cobblers man missed last week’s victory at Bradford, meaning Dean Holdsworth should have a fully fit squad to choose from.
19/02/11: Cobblers 1-1 Aldershot
This was the fourth in the Cobblers’ six game drawing sequence last season with Ben Tozer opening the scoring early on. Peter Vincenti would earn a point for the Shots before Shaun Harrad was sent off with eight minutes to play.
04/09/10: Aldershot 1-1 Cobblers
An injury time leveller from Ben Harding breaks down the Cobblers after Billy McKay’s neatly taken goal in the first half looked to have given us all three points.
12/02/10: Cobblers 0-3 Aldershot
In one of his first appearances for the club, Kevin Thornton is sent off after just eleven minutes. From the resulting free kick, Marvin Morgan put the visitors in front and would go on to claim a second after Kirk Hudson had extended their lead in the second half.
24/11/09: Aldershot 2-1 Cobblers
Luke Guttridge, now an Aldershot player, puts the Cobblers into the lead on a cold Tuesday night at the EBB Stadium. But a real collapse late on sees the hosts completely turn it around thanks to a Scott Donnelly penalty and a Marvin Morgan winner in the last minute of the game.
26/01/91: Cobblers 2-1 Aldershot
En route to a tenth place finish in Division Four that year, the Shots were beaten at the County Ground and only survived relegation because of the expansion in the Football League that season meaning that their finishing place of second bottom of the league didn’t mean they would go down.
14/09/90: Aldershot 3-3 Cobblers
Six goal thriller down in Hampshire towards the beginning of the 1990/91 season.
The Man In The Middle…
Roger East – A professional referee since 2007, East took charge of his first game of the season at Exeter on Tuesday night. He was the man in charge of Town’s victory at Reading in the Carling Cup last season and was also chosen as the official for the Stevenage – Accrington Playoff Semi Final back in May.
After the Shots produced a fine win at Bradford on the opening day the place will be buzzing so I can’t seem much more than a draw for the Cobblers at the EBB Stadium. I’ll go for 1-1.
