The Cobblers have been hit with the news that Bayo Akinfenwa will be missing for around two weeks with a fractured jaw. The big striker sustained the injury in Saturday’s defeat against Crawley but continued to play on despite the blow. There was apparently major worries that it could be a six week job but after it went down it turned out to be less of a problem than first thought and Town’s top scorer will hopefully only miss the next two weeks.
That takes in games with Port Vale on Friday night and at Bradford a week on Saturday. The next game after that would be Hereford at home on the Tuesday night so that’s the one where Bayo will be hoping to return.
Until then it’s a chance for the likes of Bas Savage to step up to the plate. Savage is the obvious option to fill in up front for a couple of weeks with Jake Robinson surely given another chance as well. I wouldn’t like to see Bas on his own up top but Robinson’s performance on Saturday was enough to suggest that he could return to the starting line-up.
Nick McKoy’s return has been talked about as an option but I would say we need him back in the middle to provide some much needed presence rather than lumping him up front.
Gary Johnson has said that Tadhg Purcell won’t be recalled from his loan at Darlington but that he has ‘options’ and could look into the loan market. It seems a bit odd to look into the contact book once again when Purcell is available if needed and also the fact that it’s only two weeks mean that any part of the budget that is available should be kept on hold. Another loan signing would give the current crop less confidence that the boss likes them but we’ll see what happens this week ahead of the trip to Vale Park.
Fair to say we wish Bayo a very, very speedy recovery!
