Pre-season trip under way with two more added….

The Cobblers’ squad has arrived in Croatia ahead of an intense training camp this week and two further signings have joined the party ahead of that trip. Towards the end of last week Neal Kitson re-signed until January 1st and should provide good competition to Shane Higgs with Higgs set to miss the first month of the season anyway.

Kitson made a dream start to his Cobblers career at the end of last season by saving two penalties in his opening two matches and certainly endeared himself to Town fans by helping us to avoid the drop. I’m happy with that and it’ll be interesting to see how things go if he makes a good start between the sticks again before the return of Higgs around October time.

The fresh arrival is that of left back Joe Widdowson. That’s our very own left-back, a position that was a real problem last season until Blair Adams shored it up with his solid loan spell. Widdowson comes highly commended from Rochdale, where he has spent the last two seasons. He’s another from a higher level and Aidy Boothroyd’s selling of the club must have come good once again.

As the squad forms together we just seem to need that leader at the back to finish off the group. Clarke Carlisle looks more and more likely not to be signing again so we could do with a defender in the same mould – someone who has that experience to rally the troops and keep the back four in line. It looks like being a busy time for them if our attacking signings so far are anything to go by so an imposing centre-back would be more than welcome ahead of the big kick off.

July 21st is the next big date with the first friendly match at Corby Town so the countdown is now on for that one!
